Seasonal Employment in Malta: Prospects for Pakistani Workers in the Tourism and Agriculture Sectors

 

With Malta's economy booming in the aftermath of the pandemic, there has been a significant uptick in the demand for seasonal labor, especially in the tourism and agriculture sectors. Job applications can be submitted through government-recognized overseas employment promoters (OEPs) or direct employer sponsorship. Some well-known platforms include EURES Malta, JobsPlus, and recruitment firms operating in the Gulf with partnerships in Malta. Verifying the credibility of any job offer is critical as some fraudulent agencies may still operate. Once hired, it is typically the employer who submits the work permit application, and upon approval, the workers receive a national visa (Type D) to travel to Malta. The processing time is usually around 6 to 10 weeks, contingent on the volume of applications and the season.  

Wages for seasonal workers differ by sector. In tourism, positions such as kitchen assistants or housekeeping staff might earn between €800 and €1,000 per month, with lodging and meals occasionally provided. In agriculture, laborers and pickers usually make between €5.50 and €7.50 per hour, influenced by the farming operation and the workload required. Overtime and bonuses for weekends can significantly enhance monthly earnings, with some workers managing to save between €2,000 and €4,000 in a single season—an amount that can transform lives back home.
